Having heard lots of rave reviews about Bristol Vellum I decided to try it out for myself. I did 2 coloured pencil paintings. One on Strathmore 300 Bristol Vellum and one on Saunders Waterford 300g HP watercolour paper. I used a selection of mixed CPs for the test.
First impressions seemed quite good but after a few layers the Bristol Vellum showed signs of becoming saturated to the point where I couldn't get anymore pencil onto the paper. In contrast, I was able to get more pencil onto the Saunders giving a deeper more vibrant finish.
My conclusion is that the Bristol just doesn't have the tooth to get a good enough finish for my liking, although I think it does a decent job when I've used it with graphite.
